Influenced by the burgeoning tensions over immigration policies within the past five years, this infographic utilizes information from the United States Department of Homeland Security's Annual Report on Immigration Enforcement Actions (2017) to determine how many immigrants have been either detained or turned away upon crossing the border, and correlations between immigration and nationality.
The DHS Immigration Enforcement Report is a rather concise data set with few moving parts, making it simple to work with. After downloading the data sheet as a .txt file, it is essential to view the document to ensure that the values included were maintained throughout the exporting and converting process.

Once familiarized with the original data set, which would be the DHS Annual Report on Immigration Enforcement Actions (2017), the spreadsheet can be uploaded and refined using Tableau by clicking "Microsoft Excel" or "Text file" on the To a File panel of the dashboard.

The original DHS Immigration spreadsheet is now saved and can be viewed in the Tableau workbook that is automatically created when a new datasource is uploaded. Verify that the data is correctly categorized by either numbers, dates, times or series, and then drag the desired variables into the "columns" (dependent variables) and "rows" (independent variables, most often numbers) sections at the top of the "Sheet 1".

This allows Tableau to instantly manipulate the initial data sheet into one of many visually appealing and accessible graphics, like "Immigrants Detained or Deemed Inadmissible by the United States in 2017" chart that is featured below.
